Equine Facilitated Learning

Connection with horses to facilitate our own emotional growth and physical well-being, allowing us to explore and expand our self awareness to achieve a more balanced and happy way of life.

EFL can be helpful for:

  • Confidence building
  • Personal development
  • Autism
  • ADHD
  • Attachment issues
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Loss and bereavement
  • Life choices

What happens in the sessions?

We will identify your reasons for seeking out EFL, as well as any specific goals, and then work through an individually tailored programme to help you with whatever challenges you face.

The programme will involve learning self regulation techniques, as well as activities with the horses that allow you to explore different aspects of yourself and your life.

We will discuss any beliefs and thoughts that come up, looking at patterns and behaviors that may negatively impact you and benefit from change.

Within the safe environment of Equine Elements and the safe relationship with the herd, we can practice new behaviors and skills that can then be used in everyday life.

Through working with horses, we can:

  • Explore how to create and maintain healthy relationships.
  • Develop our ability to regulate and self soothe.
  • Improve our self awareness and knowledge of our own capabilities, needs and desires.
  • Build our confidence and expand our comfort zone.
  • Process and work through things in our lives that may be holding us back, or causing negative emotions

We usually recommend at least 8 sessions, however this will vary depending on what your needs and goals are.

Why Horses?

  • Horses are non judgemental and non confrontational, so are a safe space to explore things that may otherwise feel unsafe.
  • Horses are very sensitive and highly aware beings, this means they can sense our internal emotional state, seeing past the projections we might put on for the outside world.
  • Horses are naturally calm and regulated, they like to feel safe, grounded and connected. When we are with them they like us to try and do the same.
  • Therapy with horses takes some of the focus away from the client, the three way relationship between client, horse and facilitator allows us to gently explore challenging topics.
  • Horses are big animals, they provide a large and clear visual representation of body language, energy levels, and emotions. Their size also means they provide a large, steady energy to co-regulate with.

Therapeutic Horsemanship

Sessions for children, teens, and young adults focusing on developing important life skills whilst learning about horses. These sessions also provide an opportunity for those with additional needs to access horsemanship/ riding sessions, as accessing traditional/ standard horse riding lessons may be difficult. We also have experience working with those who are very nervous of horses and/ or riding, but are looking to continue a connection with horses and develop their confidence around them.

Within Therapeutic Horsemanship sessions we focus on developing an awareness of the horse and their behaviour, their needs and communication, as well helping the client develop their own ability to regulate and self awareness. We can work on confidence building, anxiety levels, communication skills and much more. Through ridden work we can also help develop balance, core strength and muscle control.

Relational Horsemanship and Horse Centred Horse Care

Our Relational Horsemanship sessions focus on developing a connection with the herd and your chosen horse, learning about their behaviour, communication, lifestyle and needs. We also learn how horses communicate their emotions to us, and how our own emotions and energy affects them. Because horses are such sensitive and intuitive beings that notice our internal state, even if we are ‘just doing Horsemanship’ it is still vital that we improve our own self awareness, and develop our ability to self regulate. Horses are social animals who connect with those around them, including us. To achieve the best communication, training, and interactions, we must be present, grounded and connected, both to them and ourselves.

Once we have begun to establish a relationship with our horse, and begun to develop our self awareness and regulation, we can then learn to work with them in an ethical way that allows them choice, including for groundwork, handling, care, and riding.

We will help you learn how to ride in a balanced way that is fun and comfortable for both you and the horse, working together to feel safe and connected, and using our bodies, breathing, energy and voice to communicate.

Horse – Human Connection Coaching

Do you know a horse and want to improve the relationship between you?

Do you struggle to understand your horse and why they do certain things?

Are other areas of your life impacting your time with your horse?

Come and meet our herd to begin to explore what might be happening with you and your horse, this will then be followed up by online video sessions to discuss progression with your own horse. We will begin by looking at your own self awareness and self regulation, and think about how this influences your horse and your time together. We will think about your horse’s lifestyle, their needs, training approaches, and much more.

Alternatively if you are too far away to come to see us, we can offer online only sessions.

We also provide recommended reading and other information such as research studies, podcasts, other trainers and methodologies, course recommendations and much more, to help you in your own study and to give you opportunities for learning outside of our sessions, as well as discussion opportunities within sessions. We want to help provide as much information as possible to help you and your horse thrive.
